Operation Blue Star was an Indian military operation which took place 3–8 June 1984, ordered by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in order to remove the Sikh leader, Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale, from the Golden Temple (Harimandir Sahib) in Amritsar, India. Gandhi attacked the Sikh temple and the Akaal Takht on one of the busiest days in the Sikh calendar, where thousands of Sikhs had gathered to celebrate the physical birth of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru. The attack was supposedly to flush out Sikh militants, but there were more sinister motives at play as you will read on.
