From Ferozpur (Punjab, India) Bhai Nirmal Singh Ji completed a Gurmat Sangeet diploma from Shaheed Sikh Missionary College, Amritsar. He then became a music teacher in Gurmat College, Rishikesh.

From 1979 till until his death, he had been serving as a Hazoori Raagi of Sri Harmandir Sahib. He had also performed Kirtan at all five Takhts, historical Gurdwaras and visited over 70 countries during his life. He was one of the finest raagis having knowledge of all the 31 Raags in Gurbani of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Bhai Nirmal Singh Ji had created 110 different Kirtan albums and two books for Punjab University Patiala accessible to PhD and MA students. He was on SGPC’s Kirtan sub-committee as well as being a committee member of All India Radio and Punjab Bhaasha Vibhaag.

In 2009, he was honored with the Padma Shri Award in India (one of the highest civilian honors) in India, after Bhai Sahib Bhai Veer Singh Ji, Bhai Ganda Singh Ji, Bhagat Puran Singh Ji and other accomplished Seyvaks. He was the first Hazoori Ragi to receive this prestigious award.

Bhai Sahib passed away on April 1st 2020 in India due to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.
